Smile! its xmas! there is no way to prevent this unless Minecraft changes how it grabs the skins. When you join a server, the game grabs the skin from http://minecraft.net/skin/HappyTim.png so others on the server see your skin.

While I don't like the fact
While I don't like the fact anyone can grab my custom skin. . .at the same time It's a really useful tool for those of us with custom skins to be able to grab another backup of our skin in case something happens to our original backup. Like what happened when my external harddrive where I had my backup died on me.
