I tried getting the IP from a friend and gave him mine that Open to Lan gives you and nothing happens. We tried in the multiplayer section and nothing. How do you set up a lan or get on one and how does it work?

nothing unless they are on the same network as you as in at your house

i tried to go on someones server but it didnt work. each time i go on muitplayer it still doesnt work. i just play single player.its the same 1.3.1 i have.

The reason you can't get on multiplayer is because every server is either 1.2.5 or older and 1.3 doesn't work on them. Finding a 1.3 server is rare and if you find one it will most likely be vanilla or if they use the unstable bukkit then you can have one with plugins, but it's not stable to use yet.

If your friend is at your house, on the same WI-FI connection, he or she can play. You could use Hamachi, although I don't fully understand how it works. Can anyone explain?

well LAN is Local Area Network and what that means is that you can NOT use single player to host a server at all cause the lan settings will not allow it. you will need to get a server to host your own minceraft smp server
