I've been shooting this idea around the minecraft community and so far it's been pretty well liked, how about a mining helmet with a torch on the top of it? I mean, it is Minecraft after all, it'd help mining alot... but it'd need a little dedication to make, so I thought of something like this:

Iron Bar x4. I figured wool would catch on fire from the torch, and wood also posed the same risk\was too easy to get. It takes a little effort to get some iron, and the bottom ingredient is a piece of string -- also a sort of rare item in current minecraft. The torch requires you to find coal which is easy, but I still think the item makes sense.
Opinions? Apologies if I posted this in the wrong forum section.
Friend mentioned another idea too: maybe a lantern you could make.
Top: 3 iron bars.
Middle: Glass Left, Glass Right, Torch Center
Bottom: 3 iron bars.
Also a neat idea!

Notch received many e-mails about adding holdable torches in the past and (to my knowledge) denied them due to the mass amounts of light calculations that would be necessary for a constantly moving light source.So, unless he works more magic (which he very well may) its not likely to show up.

But, it's still a solid idea right? I understand the difficulty in execution, but I hope my thoughts in general weren't wasted. I tried to think of a clever way to craft it without it being too easy since it'd be a rewarding\desirable item.

It's a fantastic idea i definitely agree. Especially if it doubles as head armor.
But like it's been said the constant calculations for light source movement would probably give us yet another huge hit in framerate.
