The Use of Color/Block Types
One color builds are at best uninspiring, sometimes downright boring. Using different block types that compliment each other can give your build that extra "spark" or "flare". Be careful not to use too many block types, as it can make things look cluttered and messy. Use accent colors to emphasise key aspects of your build, and create the feeling of depth and scale.
Macro-Construction Tips
Infrastructures
When creating massive structures two things are important. A simple outline, and the creation of the infrastructure.
An infrastructure can make things easier on you when creating large builds for several simple reasons.
It allows you to plot out and plan things such as floors, tunnels, bridges, and much more; but it also has a much more helpful use. Creating an infrastructure can allow you spot any errors, irregularities, or breaks in a pattern; sooner then finding out after you're done with the build.
The attached image shows an example of a Central Guiding Tower, which can vary in size, shape, and complexity. The Tower acts as an Infrastructure, as it allows for the accurate measurement of everything going to and from it. Any problems would be noticed quickly due to such a build.
Superstructures
After the creation of an infrastructure, the next step is exterior design, or the Superstructure.
Let's say you're building a skyscraper, after setting up the base and infrastructure you probably have a good idea what this is going to be. For the most part a superstructure is what makes or breaks a build, a great looking exterior can do wonders. However this can also turn sour as you can imagine.
Generally a superstructure has a pattern to is, while the repetition and size of the pattern may vary, it's still a pattern. Even builds such as a "Sphinx" have a pattern, as you can generally split the build down the middle and have two mirrored halves.
A good way to improve your ability in this aspect of macro-construction; is practice.
All your base are belong to Tower!
As you begin to hone your skills at the art of macro-construction, you may start to notice the typical bases of your builds are.... well dull. How can you improve this? Simple, practice!
A great base is just as important as a great superstructure, or interior. A rectangular monotoned base would be less appealing compared to say, a star shaped base. An important thing to keep in mind during this is size. You must make sure the base isn't too large, or too small.
Like anything else, practice is your friend here. Using outlines and fly hacks will help you out a great deal here.
