Hello World of Minecraft'ers,
As many of you may have heard, Minecraft.net is down... but not in the usual sense. It would seem that several users have banded together in the hidden back rooms of the internet (Namely on 4Chan) and have started a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack to give Notch a message. EDIT: As of this edit, the Minecraft servers are up and the attack has been terminated. More details to follow shortly.

The reasoning behind this is that they feel Notch is not serving the community properly and should be updating the game much more frequently than he is. The below is a direct quote (Almost. The original 4Chan post is gone/nearly impossible to find, so it has been copied off of minecraftforum.net) from the folks responsible for the DDoS attack.

We have roughly 83,000 bots available, and preserved for this seizure, we could if we wanted to keep this going for weeks, however we have decided to give it a week, and see whether or not your attitude, and commitment will change, we believe it will when money stops rolling in for the time being…
anyhow, no we’re not from roblox, or any other minecraft clone, not to mention none of us have been around 4chan for years, and nor has any real 4channers for that matter, its all newfags now, and has been for quite a few years.”

First and foremost, let us point out that this is hardly the way you go about sending Notch a message. In fact, this is how you piss Notch off and have him pull the plug on updates for a while. Second, he can't very well make updates if he is busy attempting to fix the website so that those users who are trying to play the game can do so. His first priority is to ensure what he has going so far works, THEN update on top of that.
As many of us recall, Minecraft.net recently was overloaded due to the Free Minecraft weekend, and thus he was busy (instead of updating the game) attempting to patch it so that we would no longer suffer from those horrible rolling blackouts of service. Once Notch completed this and had it fully patched, he pushed out a few critical game updates before announcing the Minecraft Boo update (Being the massive Halloween update that will be released on the 30th) which, as one would naturally think: Large update = More time required to code it. Release of update on regular time table (being weekly) = Impossible. Makes sense, no?
On some level, we can all sympathize with these guys responsible, as we ALL want more updates to the game we bought, however this is not the way to go about doing so. Notch is one person, who is currently busy setting up his own game studio and hiring staff to help him build the game and push out updates faster.
What we have here is a case in which some members of the Minecraft community have become impatient and feel that threatening Notch will solve their problems which in reality, they are just making the problem worse. By all regards Minecraft is still in its infancy and if the game were in a Beta or Final release type mode, then the lack of updates would not be tolerated, but such is not the case. The game is still in Alpha, so these kind of delays are to be expected.
Moving forward from this, Notch has made no real comment other than that while the site is down, he will continue coding (most likely the Boo update), and from what we have heard he is leaving the problem up to his ISP to fix.
Currently all we can do is wait for a fix to be applied so we can all move on from this and continue to play the game. For those of you interested in a different take on this, below we have read links to three other posts about the DDoS attack.

How the eff will you get updates if you're flooding him with 83.000 bots? Seriously, they need to just start a forum on this website and gain members to tell Notch that he should update more. Just make all of us protest against it (although that may not work because the game rocks already).

And to think... this is a game where you (generally) have to painstakingly mine out every block you want to use for construction, which generally takes a long time, which would imply, GASP, patience. Even in Creative - sure you can /fill at Desi+ level, but that only gets you large cubes - you have to build everything up block by block.
Getting impatient because a one-man dev team (who clearly notified us) is building up a massive update for Halloween in lieu of regular Friday updates that always crashed the server, and deciding to preempt said crashes by... crashing the server... is just deplorable.

It makes me sad that some kiddies hacked the servers to say that we want more updates. The alpha is really good already so i can wait longer for beta, but thats my opinion

If they contacted notch personally, he would have no incentive to work for one of the many people asking for more updates, by screwing the game, notch has to work harder to keep everyone who wants to play happy... well at least survival can be played offline...

Alpha Single Player should still function however it will take a while for the heartbeat to Minecraft.net to finally ping out.

People who are tring to "Hack" MineCraft. Listen the maker is all alone. So if you have any right sense of mind. You would understand it takes awhile to code all of the sh*t. Hackers, You want to have the website so he will make more updates. Clearly he is having trouble doing that because you wont stop screwing up his day and making him change task. Notch is a great man with the gift of coding, and deserves to do what he wants. Oh and one last thing, HE HAS A LIFE. So stop ruining it and let him have fun with his life.

Sometimes large action is what it takes to be heard, but still I hate those retarded hackers... although has anyone else considered this as a publicity stunt? highly unlikely, but meh, I can see that. Make you all realize how much you miss minecraft, get more media attention, give people something else to worry about, and not how they want creative updates? Just putting it out there...

Wow you people are reaaaally gullible
I browse 4chan pretty much every day, and I instantly checked /v/ and the random board for news, people were annoyed why minecraft is down
there were no "EPIC MINECRAFT RAID" threads like there are in any other raids, also newfags don't just have 80000 bots at the back of their hand, it pretty much adds up by hundred people joining in and one or two having a few hundred bots
also the people of 4chan, /v/ and the random board pretty much love minecraft, if you come there and say you pirated the game, they will bash you for not supporting "such a talented developer", of course there are discussions about it too but its mainly "epic minecraft screenshot" "minecraft oc" and so on!!

Hi, never said that they were responsible, only that the apparent instigators of the attack used 4Chan to post what they did.

My point was more directed towards all the people who believe everything they are told, and who cannot read closely themselves and then rant:

By doing this were pushing away the guilt from the real attackers to the usual suspects, and therefore fall directly into the trap they set up for us
and just for the notice, if someone wanted to make valuable proof they should at least take a couple screencaps in order to also see the reactions in a thread in 4chan

And yeah don't agree with them spamming minecraft server... Because it's just plain disrespectful, and not allowing notch to get his full sales. People can just be patient and wait for updates... they'll come. So I don't agree with them spamming the minecraft server at all.

I like this. I'm not well educated on the politics behind minecraft, but if Notch did promise services that he is not providing and his reason for doing this is that "I make money, either way", this is, in my opinion, a perfect solution.
With that said, I'm not aware of anything Notch promised me that I've not gotten. I also doubt that Notch actually "promised" anything, considering that this game is still in Alpha.
I like the initiative and the utilization of force, but I feel like this attack came without reason. I only play classic, so perhaps I am simply uninformed.

the 30th update (,which will probably put the game in beta), will never
happen.
