Okay, so after some help by members here on World of Minecraft, and some help on the Minecraft Forum, plus some personal exploration, I have found a way to open and edit any texture found in game as of October 13, 2010. This is a Mac tutorial, so you PC and Linux peoples can stop reading now. (You must first have the Minecraft for Mac installed [this is installed via .dmg, not the .jar file])

1. Open a new finder window.
2. On the left of the finder window it should show a link to [Your Computer Name]
3. After clicking this, select the "Library" folder
4. After clicking this, select the "Application Support" folder
5. After clicking this, select the "minecraft" folder (this will be all lower case)
6. After clicking this, select the "bin" folder
7. You will see a file called minecraft.jar, right click it
8. a small menu will come up, there should be a option to "open with..."
9. Go open with, then select Archive Utility (my computer came with this, if you do not have this you need to download it.)
10. After you open the minecraft.jar file with Archive Utility, a new folder will be created in the "bin" folder and it will be called "Minecraft". this folder has a whole bunch of files in it, but inside you will find all the textures and skins for the entire game. I recommend using Skin Edit (see link) for the skins, and use Seashore bitmap editor (for Mac) to edit all the other textures.

I hope this helped!
