Ok, so I wanted to create my own textures but I didn't know how and there's no documentation on it.  Its actually amazingly simple, although it doesn't seem that way until you know how to do it.  So, just so it's written down here it is:

First, take a copy of  the minecraft.jar file and extract it with WinRAR, depending upon what you want to edit you'll need the terrain, dirt, or GUI .png files.

Next, you'll need something to edit it with.  The standard paint program that comes with Windows will suffice, but I much prefer paint.net; it's much simpler and much more effective.  I will post the download link at the bottom of this tutorial.

Finally, open the .png file of choice with the paint.net program and you're free to edit as you please.

If there are any questions just post them here.

An addition...

I forgot to mention that you shouldn't change the name of the files once you save them, and they also should be placed into your skin folder.

Cool!

I'm gonna try this sometime... oh wait... I'm free... does that mean the hack won't let me?

Depends.

Depends on what you mean by free.  If you mean you haven't bought the actual game it doesn't matter.  You just need the hacks.

0neWingedAngel, you need to

0neWingedAngel, you need to use a program that supports transparency. Basically, anything but Paint. I'm not sure if Paint.net supports transparency or not, but I know Photoshop does.

Paint.net does support

Paint.net does support transparency.  If for some reason you would rather have Adobe Photoshop, you would have to pay for it.  Paint.net is free.

paint sucks

Paint dosint support transparency but there is a program called paint.net witch supports transparency and the best part is its for free! Use paint.net when changing things with transparency.

Huh? Rar?

Don't make it a rar file. Use WinRAR's View tool to get into minecraft.jar.

cheese

All you need to go is that you edit the terrain.png in minecraft.jar, after creating a backup, and saving it as the exact same file in minecraft.jar.

Anything you did wrong in there?

not for ur character

FOr this to work: USE 7zip!!! then open the file folder containing mincraft.jar in the file manager, extract the contents, edit as you please, then OPEN not extract minecraft.jar and put the edited .png file back in. (the one you edited from the extracted minecraft.jar)

THIS DOES NOT CHANGE YOUR CHARACTER TO EVERYONE ELSE'S EYES

all it does is change how you see everything else

Ok, here is a walk through a blond can follow. Pictures included

3. Locate your minecraft.jar
%appdata%\Roaming\.minecraft\bin
Like this in windows 7
C:\Users\Axeblade\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin
4.Extract it with winrar
5.In the extracted folder
5.1 Locate your .png file
5.2 Backup the file you want to edit (sh*t happens)
5.3 Open the .png file you want to edit with paint.net (I went to edit Glass in Terrain.png - red lines with no transparency)
5.4 Edit it to your liking
6.Go back to your minecraft.jar. OPEN it with winrar.
7. ALL IN WINRAR
7.0 Go to the subdirectory the .png file is in.
7.1 Click Add
7.2 select the new edited .png file in the browse.
7.3 OK in browse
7.4 OK to save it as minecraft.jar
8. Play game and look at your new textures.
NOW HOW DO I DO TRANSPARENCY? been using normal paint all my life.

Wireframe

Found out myself how to make stuff transparent. Use the eraser on them, background is white and lite gray blocks when transparent.

Took a wireframe image of my view from my Spawn area's top.

Another more annoying problem

I have edited the size of terrain.png, to double size so the textures are better. My problem is i get a fire right in the centre of the brick block, as that is the position in the original file. Is there any way around this?

Terrain Blocks

Hello! I am trying to create my on texture pack but I cannot find the file for the actual terrain blocks such as dirt, sand etc. I have found the Items, Armour and mobs and such, but not the terrain itself. Can someone tell me the folder and name or give me suggestions?
