Hi all.

I just started minecraft classic on WoM. I'm simply amazed how there are so many mods / hacks and features out there my head is spinning.
I would like to learn more about the different SMP offerings. I'm sure starting as minecraft classic player limits me in various ways. I would like to learn more. I appreciate any tips to help me get started with hosting my own server. I downloaded the classic server from minecraft.net and connected to it from WoM. This limited me to playing the creative mode of course. If I jump to a WoM server I was then opened up to SMP where I could buy items and fight zombies. I was blown away with all the cool stuff out there.
So where can I begin to build my own cool SMP Server with these neat mods? I can program pretty well in Java / C#.... I noticed codeplex listed some minecraft projects but not many say if it's Minecraft classic or what... I'd like to know which codebase is more mainstream, and any other wiki's and such. Thanks.

Hello

If I were you I would lurk in other servers before bringing a server upon yourself. Trust me it is a lot of work. SMP is much different. If you insist though, make sure you have trustworthy friends to help you. You can install some cool plug ins on your server. Welcome to WoM though. Happy Crafting!

That seems slightly less fun then filling it with beer!

hiya

Welcome to WoM,

I would start off playing other servers before making your own, make some friends in the communities, become known.

Then when you are ready to start your own server, get those friends to help you start it up, advertise it a bit and see if you can get the server known by the people.

If you want a server with cool plugins, for SMP i would recommend that you use Bukkit as those servers rarely break and they have a wide range of good plugins.

To get onto the SMP server that WoM has, you need to first rank up on the classic server WoM:Realms, as this gives everyone their own world, if you are good at building and/or you are creative, it is a good way for people to see your buildings and for you to rise up the ranks of good builders.

Guys thanks your for your

Guys thanks you for your input. I also didn't realize that there would be bad players to be worried about.

Are there other server types other than SMP and WoM? I guess there's compatibility issues too. I didn't know about ranking...

The main two types of

The main two types of minecraft are SMP and WoM.

If you really want a server on smp, try googling bukkit. Bukkit is a good server hosting software where you can install plugins into the server developed by others.

If you want mods, maps or just to chat to the whole minecraft community, go to www,minecraftforums.net  -  Thats the biggest website currently hosted that has information for all diifferent aspects of minecraft.

If you want to keep up with minecrafts development, then i highly suggest looking up BebopVox on youtube. He does a weekly series where he goes over Notch's twitter and explains important stuff, as well as popular videos, mods, texturepacks, skins and heaps more.

If you just want to learn the basics of minecraft, and find out all the official information, just google the minecraft wiki. There is a bunch of junk there on server software, utilities, programs,  mods, pretty much everything to do with minecraft even down to some basic coding practices if you wanna get started.

If you are interested in coding in minecraft, try googling minecraft coder pack. That, Minecraft Forge and Modloader are the three most important compatability mods everyone uses.

If you wanna watch some funny videos, try Yogscast I guess. I dont watch most of their stuff, but I hear good things.

Apart from that, there aren't many main, popular sources of information i know of. Try lurking around google for awhile if you want more, or just find out for yourself! Have fun :)

Welcome to the WoM, and the server hosting world!

Hello Tomoprime, welcome to the great world of World of Minecraft.

Now I don't quite know what you are asking, but I'll try to reply.

If you would like to host a SMP server, download Bukkit.
Bukkit is a SMP server hosting software, and it has PLUGINS!

To download, go to the Recommended Builds on the right sidebar.
Download the newest one, and then run it. Make sure to portforward, and change the information you want. Default Port= 25565. I suggest using that port as well, because it's a Minecraft Dedicated Port.
-Plugins-
To download plugins, go to the plugins section, and download the one you want. (I SUGGEST MOVECRAFT) After, put it into the 'Plugins' folder in the Bukkit download you got. Restart your server and use the new commands!

-Making...- *Not Recommended.
If you would like to MAKE a software like Bukkit, you would need a lot of experience.

Hope this guide helped,
~ArsenalFalcon
