How Do U Put In A IP ADDRESS For A Server

Okay I have tried alot of servers on the list only the official ones work and I can't find my friends major public server on the in program list. I can find his server IP address on a most server list sites like http://minecraft-server-list.com/sort/Popular/ but can't figure out how to put this in.
play.vortexpvp.com is the server ip that comes up on the list

First of all, those servers are for the paid version of minecraft. Make sure you are using that, and not the free classic version, which it sounds like you are describing. Then go to multiplayer, press direct connect, and enter that IP.
