I just saw this on another topic: Lunick says that its probably because the servers you want to play on havent reset for 1.3.1 yet. It should fix iteslf.

Probably you updated your minecraft into 1.3.1 but the server is only for 1.2.5. So you can't go on it IF you didn't backup minecraft.jar file. The only thing now is wait for the server to update to 1.3.1 :)

Same here
I have the same problem and once I try to join a couple times it says communication error I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the update but im not too sure.
