Yesterday, I updated Minecraft to version 1.6.1, and one of the first things I did, was try and install forge. This had absolutely not effect, because the .jar is automatically downloaded when minecraft is run. So, this means as of right now, Minecraft is no longer able to be modded.

On a lighter note, I have started a new Let's Play series in version 1.6 with Max graphics! (Updated to 1.6.1 in episode 6)

In .minecraft, go to the

In .minecraft, go to the versions folder then go to 1.6.1 and install mods on that jar file.

Try using magiclauncher. This will make it about 20 times easier to install the mods.
