I have basically the worst map ever, which contains almost no iron, absolutely NO diamond, and no redstone.
...or so I thought.
I heard that redstone is very deep underground, so after 10 minutes of digging stairs underground, I FINALLY find ONE block of redstone. I mine this with my pickaxe, and NO REDSTONE DUST comes out!! ARRRRGGGHHH!!!
Any ideas on why I'm so unlucky? Is this supposed to happen, or is dust supposed to always come out?

Yea, you need atleast an iron
Yea, you need atleast an iron pick to get redstone. Look around where the redstone was, it usually veins out pretty well.

Red stone and diamond are indeed far underground.
As to why you didn't get any yield from destroying the block, you didn't use a high enough quality pickaxe.
I think you need iron+ for redstone and diamond.
and a Diamond pick for obsidian blocks.
