Hi, from my understanding, I thought we couldn't have beacons. Well, today I found one. I was wondering if I am able to summon the wither boss to try and get a beacon for myself.

You only need a wither star to make a beacon block. Wither stars are located in the skeletons. Not the boss. Just thought I'd clear tht up. I dont know what smp rules are on beacons.

1st It's called a Nether Star, not a Wither Star. (Easy mistake to make).
2nd Nether stars are only droped by withers (AKA Wither Bosses/kings).

Okay so first off, you're wrong. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Wither Wither boss drops the nether star. And second the skeletons drop the heads, of which you need three to make the wither boss.

right now beacons are classed as a creative only block same with the nether star, since the wither is disable

^ that. The beacon you found was placed by a admin/mod/trusted. It's a block in the creative inventory.

I honestly think it's better to have beacons as a restricted item. Let's face it, if players could have beacons then the whole world would have ugly lights shining up into the air.

Yes I can see it now. Everybody will want a dozen or so. One for my second home, another for my third home. Oh, another for my log cabin in the woods and then there my holiday home by the shore. I also have four of my favorite mines. Yep, you guess it. Beacons for those as well.
Maybe it will be better to just have a /home 1 and a /home 2 etc...
Best for admin/mod or creative single player really.
