Cannot run x256 resolution resource pack

I can't run x256 resolution resource pack, whenever I launch Minecraft it crashes and returns to launcher, meanwhile lower resolutions texture packs work just fine.

I don't whats wrong.. I asked my friend he says you need to install OptiFine mod to get them to work

Is that true?

You should have optifine installed regardless.

I'll never have optifine installed, causes too many problems.
