Cannot use new launcher!

Hi,
I am trying to get Minecraft to work in a school but I cant seem to connect using the new launcher.
It does not appear to support a proxy server and appears to try and go to all sorts of random IP's on the web? What exactly needs to be allowed to get this to work? We go through a local authority firewall so no doubt things will be getting blocked. Does it use a specific port?
Hopefully somebody can help with this!

Pretty sure minecraft by default connects to 25565 and java by default uses your IE proxy settings.
It's possible the school just has the port blocked.
Otherwise if you can get into java through control panel you can manually specify proxy settings.
But seriously, they probably have it blocked.
