Can't change skin? MAC 1.3.1

I have recently noticed that my skin has been changed to the default steve. Now while I like Steve, I want to have my own personalized skin. I have tried downloading, saving, and uploading to no avail. Help please?

go to minecraft.net and login to your profile and there is where you can change your skin

I went onto minecraftskins.com., found a nice skin and downloaded it onto the computer. There was a big download to computer button. I pressed that. I then went to mine craft.net, and selected change skin on the profile tab. I put in the skin file, and it said that my skin changed. I log in to mine craft, still steve.
