I am purchasing Minecraft for my son today but he has informed me that I have to buy the first version and then upgrade it with the lastest version in order to be up top date on it. Please tell me this is not like the Sims all over again..

You do not need to start at the earliest version. When you download the client, it will start at the latest version. Also, when a new version comes out it will not take forever to download. It only takes a few seconds.

When you buy minecraft, you automatically have all the versions for free. :)

First, click register on http://minecraft.net. Create an account. After you are logged in, click "Buy Now!" Pay for the game and download the launcher. If you are new to minecraft, i would NOT recommend using mods or even texture packs (that is what google/youtube is for). Hope this helped!
