Hey there!

I've played Minecraft for a few days with my friends, and we enjoy this game a lot. However, we're tired of spending 30 minutes finding a new server every day. The good servers are either full of buildings already, or they are only open a few hours a day.

So I've decided to host my own classic server, but I have a few questions that I can't solve on my own.

When I type "start server.bat" in Run (I have windows) it won't start the server.I'm most likely doing something wrong and I'd like to find out what it is.

Also, when I try to open the "server.properties" file it won't let me. I understand I have to use some kind of Java-program to open it, but I can't figure out how.

Do I have to purchase the game in order to backup/save the server?

Last but not least, could someone explain to me what port forwarding is. I keep reading it when I search the web for the above questions, but I'm not sure what it is, and I understand it's important.

EDIT: Forgot to say that the server works for me now, but since I don't know the answers to the questions above it is not public yet.

Thanks in regards!

server properties

you open server properties with notepad

you dont need to register the game will back up itself
you just set the interval in server.properties

Some Answers

Port forwarding tells your router to put all connections on a specific port to your computer. To port forward you will need to be able to log in to your  router. Google how to port forward, because every router is different. Until you port forward, nobody will be able to connect to your server.

Also, as a suggestion, I would get a different server software. Maybe MCStorm or 800Craft.  Look for "custom servers" in the minecraftwiki. They have much more features that the download on minecraft.net, including more commands, ranks, multi-world, custom blocks, etc. Some, such as MCDawn, support UpNp. Check them out and see if you like them.

Hope this helps!
