At the top of the server list

At the top of the server list on Minecraft, there is a link provided
for you to download and use the server software. Depending on how your
internet is set up, you may have to forward ports. A simple Google
search of "How to forward ports for Minecraft" - without quotes -
should give you all the information you need on that.

If the default server software doesn't satisfy you, there is a lot of custom server software that provides many extra features, such as better - albeit, usually a bit more complicated - ways to manage users on the server in terms of building limitations, along with quite a few custom commands that may make building much easier.

Custom

There are also custom servers like MC sharp and Opencraft and Luacraft which allow multi-world and more "/" commands. You can find them if you enter them on google. I prefer MC sharp and so do most other server owners.
