I'm an idiot who can't figure out port-forwarding >_<

I've tried to follow this site's Port Forwarding guide, I've downloaded the programmes, etc., but when I get to the end and check if the port's open with the Portforward.com port checker it just tells me it's not open, every single time. I've checked every step of the guide and can't see what I've done wrong. Anyone know what could be going wrong?
My laptop is running Windows Vista.
I'm sorry if this is a very stupid question, but I'm new to all this. >_< Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are port forwarding, I'll assume you are using a router. K Just look at your your router, see if there is something called "IP" or you can run the command prompt and write ipconfig all. Type the "default gateway" on the address bar. Just go to "set ports" or try to find setting ports. Set the port to 25565 for default servers and try.
