I haven't been to any realms nor do I have a realm. Every time I see a picture of a realm with maybe and I do say maybe, there someone there.
If you feel too lonely then the best thing to do is go to the World of Minecraft SMP or PvP. SMP usually have plenty of players there. Then there the villagers and of course you can even have a dog or/and cat for company.
