Ive always wondered... Is it ok to slightly improve something somebody else built?

For example, someone had built something in the Tall server, and to get in it had a simple staircase dug straight into the dirt. I was stumped for ideas on what to build, so I dug out their staircase, lined it with white two tone blocks and ice (glass?) Overall, the project took me about 20 minutes. When they get on and find it different, will they be offended? Thankful? Could it be considered griefing?

Depends on...

I think it's ok if the person who originally built it likes it or if you asked her/him first...

in the end its all about

in the end its all about respect of work, because if someone is to edit someone elses work, not only is it losing ones ownership but your basically spitting in their face, saying that, i dont like it like "this" and it would look better like "this". even though intentions are pure. although it is understandable if u have certain relations w/ that person but in the end you really shouldn't be doing it.

"polite"

I think your use of the word "polite" is pretty telling. It sounds like you're saying what jonnyabc is alluding to - that you think "it would look better" if it were changed. To echo what everyone has said, it's always better to not change/edit/delete anything done by another person without their express consent.
