So it's all over the internet that Microsoft is supposedly trying to purchase Minecraft for more than $2 billion. Obviously nothing is decided and anything could happen but I was wondering what all of you think of this?

EDIT:

Looks like it actually happened, and for $2.5 Billion!

Next thing you know I need XBox Live to play on my PC. I hope they don't make out a deal...Though it doesn't mean the hole team would be scrapped for sure.

Don't do it!

Don't do it, Mojang. Who knows what could happen.

This is probably one of the biggest over reactions in a while.

Nothing would change within mojang(unless part of the deal involves someone leaving, IE Notch). MS have a good track record with studios they have acquired.

@goal: MS tried that and it failed, they generally use steam now. Would Minecraft on steam be such a bad thing?

Interesting

That's the first time I've seen an advertisement that actually has something pertaining to the topic :O.

@Snow I suppose not...Would probably add some exposure to more consumers. More players to play with I guess.

Curious to see what happens,

one thing i can see hapening is the possibility of paid major updates if microsoft does buy it since that is all the rave in gaming right now

@nich Wouldn't be viable given that anyone with an alpha game license is entitled to all DLC to the game free of charge. Also the fact that every update has been free so far would upset a lot of people if they became paid. Most platforms other then PC already sell skin packs for money

I can seem them pushing Azure onto Minecraft Realms and expanding on that.

No! It a terrible idea I say.

No! It a terrible idea I say. That reason if minecraft become exclusive it will never popular not alone atleast.

1. It won't make has much money.

2. It should stay has multiplatform.

3. I don't think anyone should pay for online multiplayer.

5. It's to expensive on xboxlive.

6. Their might older people with no life won't pay bills.. So they can play minecraft.

P.S. Sorry about my bad grammar.

1. I'm pretty sure they plan to monetize it... and I don't think this concerns the userbase at all...

2, 3, 5. No one is saying this is going to happen at all. (you missed 4 btw)

6. That's their problem

@Dark Soltriod

You are assuming that MS will make it xbox exclusive. Remember, Windows is their platform as well.

If anyone was going to remove minecraft from platforms it would be Sony as I doubt they would want a MS game on their platform.

@MatthewMc3

I think microsoft is smart enough to not alienate most of the userbase with pay-to-win stuff or anything. I would worry about the support of minecraft on Sony platforms, they wouldn't pull from the play station shop or anything, just less updates.

Since 4J studios does the work on the console titles, I think that updates to Sony's platforms would continue at a similar speed. And if MS took any form of minecraft down from anywhere, they would become the most hated company in the world real quick. 12 year olds can be loud.

If anyone would pull down Minecraft it would be Sony. They have never played ball with MS having products on their system. Microsoft have a track record of supporting software of their own on competitor platforms(eg: iOS & Andriod)
Being the devil's advocate here, look at what microsoft did to Rare. They made them work on kinect games, and almost only kinect games, for a long time. now i'm not saying they would do that to mojang, but just sayin'.

As apart of the deal, the 2 owners of rare took the money and left. Rare made 2 very under performing games outside Kinect games since the deal so I'm not too surprised they have stuck to what they are good at(which is Kinect Games). You can see it as a bad thing but Rare did Pioneer a lot of the Kinect tech which as gone on to do a lot of good for many industries.

I'm hoping they would let Mojang do what they want to do (to a extent). maybe having Mojang become Microsoft's 'Cool indie games' department.

MS don't have a "Cool indie Games Department", just an indie developer program (which mojang do not qualify for if they are owned by Microsoft) I highly doubt MS will do anything to mojang other than bring more structure to Mojangs Business Model

I wouldn't worry your pants of about this, since Mojang (mainly Notch) has been very anti-corporate over the year, and Microsoft has been very...well... corporate over the years.

Notch approached MS about this deal. (Source, first paragraph)

To be perfectly honest, if I had a game that I was no longer working on and had the opportunity to sell it for a share of more than two billion dollars, I would definitely take it. In the end, Minecraft is just a game, and the guy who made it can do whatever he wants with it - including basically securing his finances for the rest of his life.

If they start selling

If they start selling updates, I will go down to soon to be Microsoft/Mojang and poop on Bill Gates desk.

Not all employees are leaving! Don't worry!

Well, at least Lydia, Jeb, Dinnerbone, Junkboy, and the rest of the team are not leaving, it's just Notch, Carl Manneh and Jakob Porser who are leaving, and I don't like the fact that Notch is leaving.

my thoughts

I looked it up in the rules... my thoughts on this violate about three of them...

I do understand Notch though...

I love how people were saying that Notch would never sell Minecraft because it was his baby.

I'd sell a REAL baby for 2.5 bil. Hell, I'd buy a sex change, get myself pregnant then perform ritual sacrifice on the baby for 2.5 bil.

Ugh. Microsoft.

I know what they did to Rare(ware).

They made these games

and turned it into A RACING GAME. :[

So according to my imagination, Minecraft will be updated to this:

You know, isn't Minecraft

You know, isn't Minecraft famous for being the biggest indie game in history? Well, that's not gonna be the case anymore with it under Minecraft. :(

@Legofan1028: I'm assuming you ment Microsoft at the end of your sentence? History doesn't change because of what happens in the future. Imo: MS buying minecraft only shows how far Minecraft has come.

Guys your forgetting what Microsoft has done. Without Microsoft we wouldn't have a computer to play minecraft on. (well we might, but it wouldn't run windows) Microsoft didn't MAKE Notch leave, he was leaving anyways. I think Microsoft owning Minecraft is a GOOD thing, not a thing we should be freaking out over.

Actually I think, now that a bigger company owns Mojang, it'll have faster and better development...
