Monster spawning problem

I'm finding that monsters can spawn INSIDE MY HOUSE! I thought that the computer used an algorithm to detect closed volumes, and everything inside a closed volume (such as a house with its door shut) was unable to spawn monsters, even at night. But what I find is that night monsters like Skeletons are able to spawn inside, unless I have a light source inside my house. Is this a bug? Or is this intentional on the part of the programmer to make it so that monsters can spawn inside of structures at night? I made a house with an attic, and since that is sufficiently dark at night, even with the lights on down stairs and my trap door that has a window that lets SOME LIGHT in (as can be seen by the slight increase in illumination in the attic when the light is on in the rest of the house), I am finding that monsters spawn in my attic at night. Is there a way to stop this?

Does nobody have an answer to

Does nobody have an answer to this?

I believe a proper light source (Eg. Torch, Lightstone, Redstone lamp)  is required to prevent monster spawning, and natural light (such as light given off by lava) does not completely satisfy the game's requirements

That's odd. I thought it only

That's odd. I thought it only let monsters spawn in open areas, not inside player-made structures (such as houses etc). I though each time it wanted to spawn something, it checked to see if the block it wants to spawn on is in fact out in the open, or whether it is in an enclosed volume. And by enclosed I mean except for things the monster couldn't fit through (like a 1x1 block window opening). So that way it would know the monster's size and capabilities and then determine if the monster could have gotten inside the enclosed volume had it been spawned outside. And if it determines the answer to that is "no" then it regards the place as an "inside" region instead of an outside region, and therefore prevents the monster from spawning inside. At least that's what I thought it did. Apparantly it's not that "smart" when calculating for spawning. So it ends up spawning monsters INSIDE MY HOUSE (or bunker) at night if I leave the light off. This I think is a bug that should be fixed.

Maybe it's been left to add to the feeling of "survival". That is, no place is truly safe.

Nope, requires light, it's

Nope, requires light, it's not a bug.
Otherwise monstrs wouldn't be able to spawn in closed off caves...
If you're in the house then it won't spawn the monsters (Depending on the size of the house) as there is a limit to how close they can spawn to you

mobs only

hostile mobs can only spawn between 20 and 80 blocks of a player in any darkened area.

if they didn't spawn in player-made-structures than xp grinders wouldn't be effective.

yeah

Nothing to do with the type of area around, mobs will always spawn if there is enough room, and if it is dark enough (Not on peaceful mode :P)

Placing some torches will stop your problems.

My place is dimly lit.

You don't need too much light in your house. Just enough to be nice and keeps the monsters at bay.
