So guys, as you all know the new 1.7 map is coming in the near future and I think it'd be great if we went along with what i'm about to say.

On the current map, we all know how ugly spawn is, and the fact that most of the players that have houses at spawn either don't use them or don't play on World of Minecraft anymore. So, I was thinking, because spawn is the first thing people see when they join the server, why not keep it clean and tidy? Have some very nice builds to go along with it.

I was thinking also, to get people more into this we could have a reward system so that you guys will want to keep it clean. I'd honestly be willing to pay the rewards myself, but if staff could jump on board that'd be really nice. If not, i'll do it myself.

Be honest though guys, nobody wants to see an ugly spawn, especially not new members who are seeing the server for the first time.

I'll put up some signs on the new map off the exits of spawn to remind people, or to let people know that haven't seen this post.

Thanks everyone, and sorry for the looong post.

well

Honestly I liked it the way they had it the map before this one. You had to go quite a ways before you could build and there was a market and a nice spawn town that was sit up very nicely.  If staff decided not to do that though you can't tell people what they can do. Just go build your own way and let others do what they want. It is after all a game.

@meeper

It is just a game, but games are more fun with others and ugly builds turn people away. Might as well have more people!

Lockpick, just because you think a build is ugly, doesn't mean others do. You have to remember that everyone has their own taste and just because you disagree with their chosen build style doesn't mean you can tell them its ugly and they can't build near spawn. That is just going to breed tension and animosity. They held a spawn build contest for a reason earlier. If you feel that its not elaborate enough, then next time build one that fits your idea of a great spawn so that others can see it and vote it either up or down. But I agree with meeper, you cant pick and choose who build near spawn, either everyone is allowed, or nobody.

Well

I personally agree with lock. The spawn build itself is nice, nothing to comment about. But the stuff around it is retarded imo. And YES, I did contribute to the crap ^-^. But, as I see it, the only way to fix it is or keeping the biomes around it claimed by staff, or making spawn build ridicilously large. Or purging the area around it every month.

Hmm..

Instead of getting warps to cool builds staff could just move them to spawn...

The issue with that can be explained with these two pictures:

Which one is more aesthetically pleasing for you? The gradient or the solid? Gradients are always more pretty because they solidify the artwork and everything looks like it belongs. With solids, everything looks like an alien element and disconnected, like a collage. If we put a bunch of random builds with no context next to spawn, it looks like a bunch of blocks of different colors smushed next to each other. Even if each individual block is pretty by itself, putting them all together without context makes it less beautiful. If you introduce the context after the fact, like a joke, it subtracts from the beauty. We want the context to be there without us having to explain it. With every other map, we did that by making it look like a complete build; a town with a hub. We plan to do that with this map and are thinking of installing some rules and/or regulations for nearby builds.

Agreed, but be honest. Looking at the state of spawn right now, it looks butt ugly. Theres junk on paths, different path themes and what not. I would upload a picture of a house I found 10 blocks of spawn that is made of dirt, cobble, birch wood and 1 glass block. 4x4 I might add.

I'm just thinking why not have a nice clean spawn? Theres nothing bad that can come from it. I'd be rewarding people.

What about something like on ancient SMP, where you weren't allowed to build within 500 blocks of spawn?

Not a bad idea, but then again when I was looking for server before I found World of Minecraft, finding a plot of land was hard because of the spawn limits. I think we should just have some nice looking homes that are buyable straight off spawn so that new players can get there bearings.

I don't think the protected area around spawn is a good idea... What's the point of a spawn if you need to then proceed to walk hundereds of blocks to even begin building? It will most likely agravate new players. If you truly don't want random builds cluttered up, have a nice starter town surrounding spawn.

You say you want to do this to get more people. Well think about how many you would drive away by telling them that their houses are ugly.

You could just put spawn on top of a cliff

with a litle staircase leading down. This would solve some clutter issues...

Be honest, go through spawn and try and find 5 good looking buildings, the main reason spawn is ugly is because people build there before they have decent resources and struggle to build well. Everyone has building talent, but I think some nice looking shops, some nice homes and an ACTIVE community around spawn will help us attract more users.

Agreed it will fix clutter issues, but two problems.

1. We can't be certain that the map will spawn us ontop of a hill, and i'm not sure staff will change the spawn.

2. Don't quote me, but I think the new spawn is 75x75? (Not entirely sure) so it'd need to fit ontop of the hill.

If we put a large protected area around spawn, we're just making spawn bigger. Ugly builds will still be able to border spawn, spawn will just have a bigger border.

Gonna chime in here :)
So to point out parts of just about everything I just read here I agree with mostly everything Lock said, but there is the apparent problem of new players having to walk ages to find a decent place to live. A great way to fix that problem is bringing back the /rand from the old 'PvP' it would allow people to get away from the spawn in a faster manor and just in genral seems to be better in my opinion. (If you're unaware the /rand teleports you a random area in a selected area)

But now what to do about the spawn; I would sugest trying to get everyone to stick to a certain "theme" but that's really just a pipe dream. But a way to fix it is a show casing of the best builds of the month maybe? It would really make people want to build nicer and allow not just 'one' person to keep a build so close to spawn. All in all makes it a bit more livly at spawn. The last thing would also be just nice terraforming around the area's of these "showcased" builds and not allow people to build at spawn plain out. (Making the /rand more apparent really)

Sorry for  this post being so long by the way \:D/

Also a great idea, I would even host that if nobody else wanted to. Kinda reward people for building well?

No reward would be needed to be honest. Just having the build there alone should be enough if you ask me. But I would think the mods/admins would have a sticky post for voting when it comes to best build? Would make the fourms buzz more, plus WE can move a copy of the build easy so no problems there.

to make a spawn interesting

hi,

i agree with lockpick, the spawn ist kinda figurehead of a server. Other server-owners also trying to solve this problem, some with draconic restrictions.

I want to give u an example for a nice spawn with a big area around it where building is prohibited:

(sorry for the low quality)

i don't want to advertise this server, it's a german server with only german language (english is not allowed) so i think nobody of u will stay there very long, but its worth a look...

The server is called "Arandur" (host: server.unlimitedworld.de) and its the server of the german part of the minecraft-wiki.

There they have the restriction for everybody to build "nice". Boxes made of cobble are not allowed and will be teared down by staff. Yes, this is kinda... hum, how to say.... kinda german and a bit rigorous.

But we could say, who ever builds in an area of perhaps 200 blocks around the spawn have to build "nice" (in opposit of ugly) and in consideration of the commonweal (i.e. building pathes thru their claim)

Interesting stuff in this thread...

I like the featured build idea a lot and we have talked about it internally in the past but it never really caught traction.

As for the spawn it self, there are always going to be different opinions about how one could look and if its functional.

Will post back if I have an update on what our final intentions will be (:

you could even have a vote.

you could even have a vote. anything within 100 blocks or so of spawn if it gets enough complaints about it not fitting in or just to ugly could be moved a but farther from spawn

That'd just make people feel bad, it'd be even worse for new members because we want to encourage them to be here. We can't just tell them their builds are ugly.

Like Fish said earlier, a theme would be nice but as if that would happen with such a variety of builders/players on the server.

@Fish: Yeah but lets be honest, not everyone is a builder (me) and everyone has different tastes. So it's going to be very difficult to do..

Also, a thought that popped into my head while I was typing this was what if people had to earn their right to build in a set perimiter of spawn? I don't know, at the start of the server it would be impractical but yeah, just a thought.

Yeah I was thinking that, but the barrier could be 100 blocks or something, so not to far to walk and the new members could see the buildings and make them more intrested in joining the server.

Yeah that sounds good but it should be another build off in the "comp" world and everyone builds things for spawn in the 100blk radius?

>spawn<

Way back when I first started playing on this server, I really enjoyed the spawn there because it was a like a small castle courtyard with the bulletin board and roads or streets weaving around shops and stuff. Also there was a notice that only shops would be near spawn, as there were far too many personal buildings crammed into everything. If you wanted to find a spot to build, you had to hike a little bit, but obviously there were signs listing warps to large towns and stuff.

Of course, I ended up building near the MA, close to the corrupted map and Hallyn's ghost town...but anyway that map spawn was in my opinion one of the best.

I might have a cool idea for the new map spawn, which could solve build issues. Maybe it's not spawn size we need, but spawn height.

In the most recent map masonmario2 built an island in the sky and maybe spawn could be built on a massive sky island or castle structure with some sort of transport to carry everyone down below, where they can build and do whatever. Or the bottom can be shops and then further out can be builds.

Anyway that's my thought for now. Peace

some ideas

Just some thoughts on the spawn. If we still need a build for it, I would be willing to build one. Size and theme can be picked by a admin or vote, whichever. As for how to handle it. I would say have an isolated area (walls, cliff, etc) with signs that warp players to 4 or so different points. This way, it distributes how many people are competing for the same initial area as we start to spread out and keeps them from building on top of spawn as it would tp them away from it.
