I am new to working on computers and minecraft i am running 1.2.5 and need to know if i can up grade to a 1.7 or the new 1.8 vrs. without paying again and if so how i am just starting out with some mods and there are a few that i need a 1.7 for

1.2.5 is the latest version of full release minecraft, if something says 1.7 or 1.8, it probably means minecraft beta.
You can downgrade to those by getting downloading the correct jar files.
I would suggest using digiex for that, it is a client which allows you to download jar files from all of the past releases of minecraft and choose which one you want to play with: http://digiex.net/minecraft/mcvtool/
