Cant you just change the Opacity with this?
Run>%temp%\www.minecraft.net>Mincraft>Terrain.png>Paint.net(or other pic editers) and just change it there?
or are you talking about something else

Ever tried making glass just a little bit transparent? Just like a shade of white? It doesnt work. Its either completely opaque or completely transparent

I am all for what you're talking about, but you've got it defined all wrong.
Transparent/Transparency: Allows all light to pass through.
Opaque/Opacity: Allows no light to pass through.
Translucent/Translucency: Between the above two; Allows some light to pass through.
Therefore, what you're really shooting for is Translucency.
Like, for visors or stained-glass windows. Basically, colored, see-through stuff.
As far as the debate over which is which, they're not the same, they are opposite, but it's all in how a property is defined. If a property's name is "Transparency," then setting it to 1 will make it invisible. If it's "Opacity," setting that to 1 would be making it solid.

That is true, Opaque is the complete absorbsion of light, and Transperancey is no absorbsion of light, thus Translucency is the varying magnitude of light absorbsion.
But any graphics manipulation program will measure the alpha leves and label them as Transperency/Opacity....
