Installing textures easily!

may i ask a quick question about texture packs? why is it some terrain.png's that you see here look like the one that i have (the colors are horizontal in the middle)
like:
and some are a different layout
if they can both be used how can i use the second kind on World of Minecraft? because i cannot figure it out, whenever i redownload the minecraft.jar it always comes with terrain.png with the colors horizontally in the middle.
help is very appreciated because i like editing textures but it seems no one uses the same kind of files i do. plus id love to download some textures i see, but none of them work (because they are set up different)

you should check out the one I'm making. It isn't completely finished, but you won't notice that, really. that is, assuming you play Beta, not Classic?

ok check it out, the top pic is of a classic texture.
thats the first version of minecraft.
the 2nd pic is a texture of minecraft beta.
its the version you gota pay for.
but with your 2nd pic it is missing the wool, which is usually vertical and goes under the 2 doors.

I believe that the top one would be for minecraft classic, and that colored bar is the wool. the bottom one is for a (really old) version of the actual minecraft game
