hi! I'm doing a school project on the sort of alternate persona that people are able to express by playing video games. I would like to see if any people out there with a lot of minecraft experience (or if there are any extra-famous people from the community) who would be willing to take 5-10 minutes out of their time to answer 6 questions for a brief interview about what sort of effect video games has had on his/her life.

Just post or pm me, and no trolls please, i'm actually doing this for a school project

just to clarify the specifics of the project due to people wanting to know:

i'm interviewing people across 3 different games, runescape, wow, and minecraft.
there are 6 questions in the interview.
my final project will be divided into 18 sections, with the 6 main ones being the question, with each of those 6 sections divided into 3 smaller ones based on each game.

As a general rule, please provide some level of detail when responding to the questions, for example dont just say 'its fun, no' for a response to the first question.

The 6 questions are as follows:

1. Why do you play minecraft? Do you sometimes use it as an escape from reality?

2. Do you feel like you have more freedom to do what you want inside minecraft or inside real life? why?

3. Do you have more confidence in your abilities to do things in game or in life?

4. Do you feel that by playing minecraft, it has increased your overall happiness in real life?

5. What would it take to make you stop playing minecraft?

6. How much time have you spent on minecraft(estimate or exact)?

1. Why do you play minecraft? Do you sometimes use it as an escape from reality?

Cuz Minecraft is FUN !!!! Many people play games to escape from IRL , But I just like playing all games and do competitions, and minecraft is fun >D lots of IRLfriends playing it aswell :P

2. Do you feel like you have more freedom to do what you want inside minecraft or inside real life? why?

Got all the freedom I want ^^ .
And beside freedom ingame is ussual more limited to IRL , since you are bound to rules of the server ^^ .

3. Do you have more confidence in your abilities to do things in game or in life?

Whatcha talking about Willis ? :P I got a good life ^^ Ingame and IRL >;D

4. Do you feel that by playing minecraft, it has increased your overall happiness in real life?

Yes , I escape from Minecraft to real life because there are no: Creepers , Giant Spiders , Zombie and Skeletons who can shoot bow and arrow.

Not really :P since you kinda need to spend IRL money on games XD :P jk xD
If you're happy and you know it clap your hands ^^

/CLAP

5. What would it take to make you stop playing minecraft?

ok, lets go

1. Why do you play minecraft? Do you sometimes use it as an escape from reality?

When I started minecraft if was as an escape from reality, but then after I started to play multiplayer, I made a tonne of new friends, and now I kinda play it to stay with my new friends just as much as to have some fun.

2. Do you feel like you have more freedom to do what you want inside minecraft or inside real life? why?

Not really, I like the fact that I know my limitations in minecraft, I feel that it makes life simpler and I wish that real life could be more like that in some ways.

3. Do you have more confidence in your abilities to do things in game or in life?

I would say that I was more confident in game, because I know what I am trying to accomplish, I feel that in life it is easy to carry on doing things with no real goal in sight.

4. Do you feel that by playing minecraft, it has increased your overall happiness in real life?

I do feel that minecraft has increased my overall happiness, it gives me my own space to retreat to where no one else can go and where I can do what I like, and it makes me feel like I have actually achieved something when I finish a big build, and I then feel good after that.

5. What would it take to make you stop playing minecraft?

My laptop breaking, or some form of natural disaster.

6. How much time have you spent on minecraft(estimate or exact)?

I have no idea, but probably way too much :P

Minecraft for school presentations

Minecraft is great for school presentations as well - i've used it for chemistry to explain what bronze is and talk about alloys using tekkit.

1.) I play minecraft because it is a very simple way of creating something, it doesn't take months to be creative, it's really intuitive and minimalistic.
I don't as such feel like I am practicing escapism by playing minecraft, but i'm sure a large portion of the appeal the game has,  has to do with the desire to be in, and actively interact and participate in, a world like the ones we see in movies where different rules apply than in our universe and as such we don't have the same limitations as in the normal world, where we can't simply built a giant castle and then blow it up using tnt og dig out massive underground systems and discover gigantic underground cavesystems.

2.)  As I was sort of saying before, what minecraft does is that it gives us an easy way of materializing our ideas. We can think of it and then just imidiately built it. Minecraft is a catalyst for our creativity and expression.

3.)  Honestly being a new player, and not very concerned with progressing in the game (yeah i take my time!) I don't always do well in the game because i forget to get back to base with the resources i've gathered before I get killed (perhaps i'm playing too casual?). So in fact i have more confidence in my abillities in real life, although in reference to the previous questions, I can imagine people with less succes in different situations in real life would seek out worlds like minecraft to escape from their own incapabillities, shortcommings and the boundaries that keep them from fulfilling their creative potential.

4.)  I don't think you should ever credit overall happiness to games, as by far most games are simply there to pass time, you might say that minecraft has more to offer in terms of contributing to the game rather than just going through a campaign or killing off foes, however i believe overall happiness comes from having a healthy and balanced lifestyle, part of a healthy lifestyle is socializing, and some people might feel it's easier to do that through minecraft because it provides a safe and more distanced way of interacting with people, perhaps people with e.g. aspergers syndrome might have an easier time socializing with minecraft than in real life because minecraft provides a continuous interface and gameplay that all players must abide by, while their needs for structure in real life might be too much to cope with for most people. The important thing is to not let minecraft go ahead of responsibillities and make you procrastinate too much, like I am now ;:).

5.)  I think the most likely reason for me to stop playing minecraft would be a monthly fee, that would definitely scare me off, I just don't "need" minecraft enough to pay money for it continuously like people do with WOW, but seeing that probably wont happen since Notch is an epic dude, i think i'll probably stop after a while of playing if the game stops evolving, that is to say when i feel i've seen all it has to offer. However the game is constantly updated and changed, so I don't think that will happen anytime soon, the biggest threat to minecraft for me would be Diablo 3 which i currently cannot afford.

6.)  I don't have any number of how much i've played minecraft, but i've been playing it for about a year now and i've been coming back to it on and off often playing for several hours in between other activities. So i'm guessing i've played a couple hundred hours. (probably less than 1000 Hours though)

Let's do this!

1) I find that I am able to easily express my inner creativity by utilising Minecraft's unique art style and allowance of freedom for building things, unlike other games which place limits on what you can create.

2) Inside Minecraft, I am able to express what I want to create, instead of what I have to create. However, things that I make in real life are also usually harder to create in Minecraft, whether it be due to the lack of knowledge on how to construct it or the lack of freedom (Eg. Map limits). So I find that both real life and Minecraft have their own limits on freedom and that they both contrast each other in different ways.

3) Minecraft places it's own limits on what you  can do by using its art style of "everything is a cube". This places a limit on the creation of things such as circles, which is hard to truly master without proper guidance and practice (Me haz done this!). I find that real life also poses some problems, since things you create in real life look bland without detail, whereas in Minecraft, instant detail can be added in mere seconds.

4) Somewhat, yes, because it's allowed me to express my creativity in a fun way!

5) If I get bored of it (which I usually don't) or if a new game comes out (Usually finish those in a few days or so).

6) I have been playing since 2009 for a few months, then a long 8 month period of not playing it and then I picked it up again in August of 2010, and have been playing it since. So that's around 20 000 hours.

1. Why do you play Minecraft?

1. Why do you play Minecraft? Do you sometimes use it as an escape from reality?

Use it to escape reality? No. But I wish it was as easy and cheap to build stuff in real life like Minecraft. I play it mainly for the social interaction, I'm a terrible builder so there isn't too much I can actually do.

2. Do you feel like you have more freedom to do what you want inside Minecraft or inside real life? why?

You may have a lot of freedom in Minecraft but it is restricted to what is available in Minecraft (including mods) so you really do have more freedom in Real life than inside a game.

3. Do you have more confidence in your abilities to do things in game or in life?

I probably have more confidence in game because if I stuff up in a game then it is just a game which you can turn off and forget about but some events in life you can't do that with.

4. Do you feel that by playing Minecraft, it has increased your overall happiness in real life?

Yes, I'm happy to show what I have done/built to people and see their reactions to it. I don't get to do that a lot with other things.

5. What would it take to make you stop playing Minecraft?

The only thing that would stop me playing is if Notch/Mojang added some extra form of payment to the game or made some stupid decision with it or simply throw it away.

6. How much time have you spent on Minecraft(estimate or exact)?

I honestly don't know, I've been playing since September 2010 and I can say it's my most played game ever easily. This is where I wish it was on Steam or had some better form of tracking system.

Let's get this started!

1. Why do you play minecraft? Do you sometimes use it as an escape from reality? Because it is so fun and beast. Nah, not really

2. Do you feel like you have more freedom to do what you want inside minecraft or inside real life? why? Minecraft. Because I can't build a brick mansion, etc.

3. Do you have more confidence in your abilities to do things in game or in life? Both.

4. Do you feel that by playing minecraft, it has increased your overall happiness in real life? Yes, definitely.

5. What would it take to make you stop playing minecraft? If they took my premium version off and didn't let me get it back.

6. How much time have you spent on minecraft(estimate or exact)? I started playing Minecraft in early 2012 (yes, I'm kinda a n00b, but not really). I play about 2-3 hours a day (some more, some less).

If you have any more questions or anything else, PM me.
