I was on smp today, and Ryan and Jak asked everyone to try out the new server 199.116.112.47. That server ended up being the same map as the Public SMP Server. So since maps could be copied and "transfered", I was thinking that maybe, to solve problems on the question of whether or not there would be a new map in 1.3, there could be a new map but maybe all the old maps could be put on their own server, or just one server and every other week or month or so, one of the old maps would appear and we could play on it like old times.

I own a 24/7 Bukkit server and you can copy and reuse maps when the update comes. You get the world_save of the Multiplayer world, play it in Single Player, then upload it again. I'm planning to do this to my server when 1.3 comes out. :)
