for those who cant/dont watnt to buy the game there is still hope. he put a button at the bottem of the save game list for single player "save to file". it takes your level and compresses it into a file that you can reopen by pressin "from file" on the load game menu. notch was running outta space, but he did not leave free players with nothing

Yes, you do have to buy the game in order to save. why? because Notch (creator/dev) has been running out of space for the save files too fast that he needed to implement this in order to keep his storage from overloading.
he did NOT do this for any super devious marketing plan that will make ppl buy the game, it was needed
p.s. it is not 20$ its 10 euros (idk the names of currency) or 15 USD for alpha. but once Beta jumps in it will go up to 20 euros or 30 USD

well it would be nice if this were to happen but again, the reason why this was put into place was because the minecraft's "admin" was running out of space to hold all of the save files so they kept crashing. The only thing he could do was to make it so that premium users can save.

Yes you do have to buy the game to save. Recently he opened save up for everyone, but stopped as it started taking up too much room. Don't forget Notch is making this game as his career. He is a games designer. When you say "Buying games sucks" you are basically saying you don't care. Considering it's only $20, and he's going to sell it 4 times that as a fully fledged game, its a pretty good deal. And in answer to your question, yes, yes you do.
