I'm new to Minecraft and have gotten a few friends into it and want to play multiplayer Alpha with them, but can't seem to set up a server. I downloaded the server program and tried tinkering with things a bit, but really have no idea how to continue from there.

If anyone can help without calling me a complete internetz nub, that'd be much appreciated.

After looking around a little

After looking around a little more, I've found nothing but Port Forwarding which doesn't seem to do much...

but additional info on my issue:
I have the server I just don't know how to: Access it personally, find the IP to give friends to use to connect, use server commands [need to set up before venturing those depths], nor do I know how to promote server security. Any help with these issues would be incredibly appreciated because, frankly, I'm anti-techy.

Port forwarding is a must for

Port forwarding is a must for any host.
To access it personally, (from same comp) type "localhost" when joining instead of the ip. From another comp, just use The ip.
To find the ip of the hosting comp, goto http://whatismyip.com with the hosting computer.
While running the server, type /help into the chat to bring up a list of commands.

Hope this helps. :D
