Is it possible to change the texture of water and lava at all?  I would like lava to be slightly more translucent so that I can build in it.

Thanks,
Dhel

Nope.

As far as I know it is currently impossible to change texture files of water and lava. I might be wrong though.

Water and lava are hardcoded

Water and lava are hardcoded into the game, and cannot be changed at this time

No. The textures seen in

No. The textures seen in terrain.png don't do anything. They're hardcoded into the game.

More info

I don't know if this helps at all but you can increase the size of the terrain.png file to 512x512 or something higher than 128x128 (I'm making a custom texture pack and tested a few things out). By increasing the size of the png, the custom texture for water shows up though does not move. Essentially this just reaffirms that the moving water is hard-coded into the game and set to only function at as a 16x16 textured block.
