Why is does my server say,"Failed to connect, it is probably down"?

Okay, I downloaded the server program, and everything is fine, but when somebody tries to join, even me, it says,"Failed to connect, server is probably down."

Could you help me fix the problem, or at least (try) to give me the source?

Any help would be appreciated.

i can connect through the url in the external url in the file but when some1 else not on my ip says failed to connect

Possible solution..

Hi. in my case when i run my MCderp Server on my other dedicated computer, i can't connect on this computer via minecraft.net/serverlist...(other plays can connect! but not me!i think its a router problem..)
It says, "you failed to connect to the server. it's probably down" i have found this possible solution, it works for me(i'm using one router to connect to the internet)... just go to ur browser and

http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?ip=<thelanipofurdedicatedmachine>&port=<theportuareusing>

Make sure u got ur port open on the router ;)
